Law Clerk, Center for Food Safety

The Center for Food Safety, is a nonprofit food safety and environmental advocacy organization that addresses the impacts of industrial food production on human health, animal welfare, and the environment, and promotes sustainable alternatives such as organic agriculture. CFS works to achieve its goals through litigation, grassroots campaigns, legislation, public education, and media outreach. CFS has an impact litigation docket and is currently actively involved in multiple high-profile cases. Learn more at centerforfoodsafety.org. The openings are for the San Francisco and Portland offices.

Position Description: CFS is seeking creative, motivated law clerks interested in doing meaningful litigation and policy work on behalf of the public and the environment. Specific issues include, for example, genetic engineering, concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs, or factory farms), aquaculture, organics, and food labeling. Law clerks support litigation in those and other areas by, among other things, performing legal research, drafting legal documents, attending hearings, writing petitions, and supporting attorneys in litigation. CFS law clerks work closely with attorneys in a small nonprofit setting while gaining practical litigation and policy experience. Qualifications: Fall 2014 law clerks should be available to work part-time (ten to fifteen hours per week) for ten weeks in our San Francisco office. Positions may be paid, but we encourage students to seek fellowships, school credit, or work study whenever possible. No experience in food issues or environmental law is necessary, although it is definitely a plus. CFS is an equal-opportunity employer with respect to race, gender, age, ethnic background, disability, and sexual orientation.

To Apply: Please e-mail a cover letter, resume, writing sample, and list of references to Jessica Daniels at jdaniels@centerforfoodsafety.org.
